Febrile Seizures - What Parents Need To Know Print E-mail
About one month ago my daughter was home from school with a high fever.  After I just gave her some medicine to reduce her fever, she stopped breathing, turned blue, starting shaking and her eyes rolled back - I thought she was dying.  Hysterically crying, I called 911 and sent my contractor to get my neighbor who is also a nurse.  In the meantime, I tried to perform CPR but for the minute or two that it lasted I truly thought my little girl was going to die.  The Milford EMS squad (you rock!) showed up in less than five minutes.  They explained that she likely had a febrile seizure (a what?) and we decided to take her to the hospital for further testing and observation.  Thank goodness our little girl was released the same day.  Her fever lasted for about 5 days, due to a virus.  We were told that this may occur again which of course frightens me to the core.  I contacted Dr. Calabrese of Skylands Pediatrics to provide more information to our PikeMoms.com users on these types of seizures because I'm afraid pediatricians are not doing a good enough job educating parents and warning parents of the possiblity that this may occur - and if so what to do.  If you too have had to live though this - I am so sorry.  You are not alone - and thank goodness most of these are harmless.

Childhood Obesity

OBESITY

Childhood overweight and obesity is becoming a major health problem for our children. A recent survey according to the National Health and Nutrition Survey revealed that 31.9% of children and adolescents were overweight (BMI at or above 85%) and 16.3% were obese (BMI at or above 95%). Obesity is an excess percentage of body fat which puts children at risk for health problems.

What is BMI?

BMI is Body Mass Index which is calculated from your child’s height and weight. For children and adolescents BMI is age specific and should be plotted on a special growth chart to give a percentile ranking for their age.  A BMI and percentile should be performed at each well visit beginning at the age of two years.

What are the effects of Childhood Obesity?

Overweight children are at risk for many health problems. Asthma, sleep apnea, joint pains, and skin infections are some of the more evident problems. However, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gall stones, and type 2 diabetes can also be seen (previously referred to as Adult Onset Diabetes).  Emotional and Social Health problems can also be linked to obesity, such as low self esteem and self confidence. Low self esteem and self confidence have been linked to poor academic performance, fewer friends, and depression.

What can be done to prevent obesity?

Children should have routine well care and a BMI should be performed at each well visit.

Good nutrition and activity should be encouraged.

  • Children should be encouraged to eat five fruits and vegetables each day.
  • Limit screen time (TV, video games, computer) to two hours or less per day.
  • Get one hour or more of physical activity every day.
  • Drink fewer sugar-sweetened drinks and try low fat milk or water instead.

'Swine' Flu Vaccine is Big Concern at Back To School Doctor Visits
Written by Dr. Carol Calabrese

The end of summer vacation means back to school.  In my office this means lots of school physicals, forms and immunizations. Two of the questions that I have been frequently asked this year are, “When can I get my flu vaccine?” and “Where can I get a “swine” (novel H1N1) flu vaccine?”
